Despite the threat that “there will be consequences” by the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan (SAN), the African Democratic Congress (ADC), said it is going ahead with its national convention.
The party has already set up a 22-member National Convention Central Coordination Committee, with former Cross River State governor, Senator Liyel Imoke, as Chairman with his Sokoto State counterpart, Senator Aminu Tambuwal, as Deputy.
The convention is fixed to hold next Tuesday, April 14 in Abuja. As at the time of filing this report, the party has not yet disclosed the venue. The National Publicity Secretary Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, told Sunday Telegraph that he would confirm the venue “and get back later.”
This might be for security reasons, so that it will not be disrupted by the agents of the Federal Government. Last Wednesday when the party staged a protest to the headquarters of INEC, against the derecognition of its leadership by the commission, the protest was kept secret, even to journalists, till few hours to its take-off, and it was successful.
There was no deployment of security personnel, which has always been the case in the past. ADC had accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) led Federal Government of plot to destabilise it, out of fear that the party would pose threat to President Bola Tinubu’s reelection next year.
