Ilara-Mokin, a town in the Ifedore area of Ondo State in South-West Nigeria, has planted 800 trees as part of its green initiative for the community.
In a statement on the second phase of the tree planting exercise, it was disclosed that the first phase was done during the official launching of the programme in the palace.
It stated, “For this second phase, about 800 seedlings were involved. The second phase came up on April 30 and May 1, 2025. On Wednesday, the planting exercise started at the first entrance of the city beside the petrol station. Both left and right sides of the road were planted up to the town centre and to the post office area. The planting continued along the street beside the post office.
“That day, the palace, Wuraola Health Center, the general hospital, and Mega Primary School were planted with different species of trees. A small woodlot was established for Mega Primary with over 50 seedlings of Tectona grandis.
“The following day, Friday, planting started at the palace street up to the Elizade guest house before moving to the second entrance beside the general hospital. Both sides of the road from the general hospital were planted up to the centre of the town.”
According to the statement, the planting was done along the street.
It continued, “Then we continued with the main street along the Wuraola Health Centre, St Andrews Primary School, to the front of the personal house of Baba Elizade. We stopped after the houses along Elizade University road.
“The front of Major General Omojokun’s house and other private houses along the road were planted with avenue trees. The front of the primary school after UBA was well planted up too. UBA car park was also well planted with appropriate species that can provide shade.
“The front and inside of St Andrew’s Primary School were well planted with Tectona grandis to serve as a windbreak.”
On the challenges, the statement revealed that getting the seedlings was not easy.
