ICAN Tasks FG to Ensure Nigerians Enjoy Tax Dividends

The immediate past president of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria and grand patron of ICAN Mowe District, Davidson Alaribe, has urged the Federal Government to ensure that Nigerians enjoy the dividends of the taxes they pay as it begins the implementation of the new tax law.

Alaribe made the call at the end-of-year party of ICAN Mowe and District at its permanent site along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Saturday.

Alaribe noted that although the new law aims to bring all taxable Nigerians into fulfilling their civic responsibilities, such patriotism must be matched by the government’s provision of essential services to citizens.

He said, “The issue is that the government wants to bring everyone into the tax net, provided you earn an income, as is done in advanced countries. Everyone will comply, and tax professionals, who are chartered accountants, will advise our clients to do so.

“We also advise the government that it should show dividends of democracy. If you collect money from people, you should also ensure that infrastructure is put in place, our roads, security, and many other necessities.”

He commended the district for its strides during the outgoing year and encouraged members to do more in the new year.

In her remarks, the Chairman of ICAN Mowe and District, Adekemi Adekunle, said the end-of-year celebration was a time for reflection and appreciation of God’s goodness upon members of the district.

She noted that her administration had been committed to the growth of members, adding that they had also been trained on how to take advantage of the new tax law as professionals.

“We are here today to celebrate and thank God for the success of the year. We have remained committed to the welfare of our members, and we have also increased our membership strength by 20 new members.

“We have been involved in capacity building for our members through technical sessions to upskill them on the new tax law and ensure they benefit from the opportunities it brings to professionals,” Adekunle said.
