Group Warns Against Over-Reliance on Apapa & Tincan Ports

The League of Maritime Editors has stated that the over-concentration of port activities in Apapa and Tin Can Island Ports has created monumental congestion, corruption, and inefficiency.

The group stated this in a statement on Wednesday, jointly signed by its President, Mrs Remi Itie, and the Secretary-General, Mr Felix Kumuyi, obtained by The PUNCH.

LOME also frowned at a recent comment by the Lagos State Government reported by Vanguard, criticising the Nigerian Ports Authority for its decision to shift operational focus from Lagos ports to the Warri Port Complex, a move the Authority says is aimed at reducing congestion at Apapa and Tin Can Island.

The report added that recent NPA operational data showed improved efficiency and cargo handling at the revitalised Warri and Koko ports, suggesting that the shift is already yielding positive results.

According to the Vanguard report, reacting to the development, the Senior Special Assistant to the Lagos State Governor on Transportation and Logistics, Mr Adekoya Hassan, argued that the problem lies not in the Lagos ports themselves but in long-standing policy flaws within the NPA.
