A former People’s Democratic Party (PDP) presidential aspirant, Gbenga Hashim, has resigned from the opposition party.
Citing unresolved internal divisions and unsuccessful reconciliation efforts, Hashim said the party has been plagued by “Persistent and unending crises” for more than a year, leading to its division into two major factions.
In a resignation letter dated April 4, 2026, and addressed to the PDP Chairman of Usuma Ward in Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Hashim stated that his decision takes immediate effect.
Hashim, a former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the party, noted that he had worked with other stakeholders in attempts to resolve the disputes and restore unity, but those efforts did not succeed.
He expressed concern that the crisis has worsened over time, weakening the party’s structure and cohesion.

He further alleged that the situation appears to be partly driven by forces aimed at diminishing the PDP’s strength as a viable opposition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to him, the ongoing instability could hinder the party’s ability to present credible candidates or reduce its role to that of a passive supporter of the ruling government.
“I cannot, in good conscience, be complicit in actions that undermine democratic values,” he said.
Hashim also pointed to the broader national situation, highlighting growing insecurity, loss of lives, and economic challenges across the country.
He maintained that remaining in such a political environment would contradict his personal beliefs and principles.
Describing the current state of the PDP as disappointing, he attributed its decline from a once dominant political force to internal conflicts and self-interest among key actors.
Hashim added that he intends to work with like-minded Nigerians to prevent the country from drifting into a one-party system and to help build a new political movement focused on security, justice, and economic growth.
