The Federal Road Safety Corps has appealed to the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation for the timely release of funds to enable the agency to meet its operational obligations across the country.
According to a press statement on Wednesday by the Director of Press and Public Relations at the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation, Mr Bawa Mokwa, the appeal was made by the Corps Marshal of the FRSC, Mr Shehu Mohammed, during a working visit by the Accountant-General of the Federation, Mr Shemseldeen Ogunjimi, to the Corps headquarters in Abuja.
Mohammed said the FRSC remained committed to its mandate of ensuring safety on Nigerian roads but noted that the agency continues to face operational challenges, which require sustained funding.
He explained that road safety had become a global agenda and that effective enforcement could not be achieved without adequate financial support.
The statement read, “While noting that no strategy to promote road safety can succeed without adequate enforcement, the Corps Marshall highlighted the operational challenges faced by the FRSC and sought the AGF’s support in addressing them through enhanced budgetary provisions and timely releases of funds.”
He appreciated the cooperation between the FRSC and the Treasury, noting that the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation had played a supportive role over the years.
However, he stressed the need for closer engagement to address funding constraints that affect field operations and logistics.
In response, the Accountant-General of the Federation assured the Corps of continued support and committed to treating its financial requests with urgency.
Ogunjimi acknowledged the enormity of the FRSC’s responsibilities and said the Treasury recognised the risks faced by the Corps’ officers and men and would prioritise their needs.
“Your officers and men are always on the road, trying to keep the roads safe. For us at the Treasury, we will continue to support the FRSC. I want to assure you that every bit of your request and needs will be given prompt attention,” he was quoted as saying in the statement.
He added that the OAGF valued the long-standing working relationship with the Corps and would work to strengthen it in the interest of public safety.
