Flood washes away corpses from graves in Edo community

As floods continue to ravage and submerge communities along the River Niger, corpses are being washed away in Etsako Central Local Government Area of Edo State.

DAILY POST reports that the corpses were washed away in Udaba community in the locality.

Joseph Odemokpai, Councillor representing Ward 8 of Udaba, Ofukpu, Agbavo and Osomhegbe in the local government, disclosed this in a chat with newsmen in Benin City.

Odemokpai also said that some people reportedly died in the locality due to the severe cold caused by the flood.

According to him, the flood situation and water level are still high in the affected communities. “The whole communities are ravaged by flood, and we are trying to move our people to the camp for safety.”

“The flood situation is the same also in Ward 9 and Ward 10, which include Anegbete, Udochi, Ogomere, and Ifekhu, Ofukpo, among other communities in all the affected local governments.

“In Udaba, some dead bodies have been washed away from the graves by the flood. Some people have even died due to the severe cold caused by the flood.

“Houses, farmlands such as cassava, rice, yam, and other crops were submerged; farm produce, livestock, and property were swept away by the ravaging flood,” he said.

He, however, called on the federal, state and local governments to come to the aid of the affected communities.

He noted that the authorities of the local government are taking some action at the moment while awaiting the state and federal governments to complement the council’s efforts.

The Councillor also called on the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Edo State Emergency Management Agency (EdoSEMA) to assist the communities.

DAILY POST recalls that the local governments affected by the flood in the state are Etsako East, Etsako Central, and Esan South East, while some of the communities affected include Udaba, Anegbete, Ekperi, Osomhegbe, Ogoimeri, Iowawa, Ofukpu, Ifekhu, Agenebode, Ubiaja, Ilushi, among others.
