FG powers Lagos community with solar energy project

The Federal Government has launched a solar power initiative to bring clean and steady electricity to homes and small businesses in the Ibeju-Lekki area of Lagos State.

The project, known as ‘Light-Up Ibeju-Lekki’, was unveiled by the Presidential Community Engagement Office, South-West in collaboration with the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure and the Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Area.

Speaking at the launch of the project on Tuesday, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Community Engagement, South-West, Moremi Ojudu, said the project was part of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, focused on delivering sustainable development to communities nationwide.

Ojudu said the initiative was designed to reduce the electricity burden on families and businesses while creating economic opportunities at the local level.

He said, “We are here today on behalf of President Bola Tinubu to say, ‘We see you, we hear you, and we are with you.’ This project is not just about solar panels; it’s about real empowerment, homegrown solutions, and shared progress.

“The project aims to improve access to clean, reliable, and sustainable energy at the community level by reducing the electricity burden on families and business owners while stimulating economic growth.”

The Chairman of Ibeju-Lekki Local Government, Sesan Olowa, commended the partnership, noting that it aligned with the council’s development priorities.

“We are grateful for this federal intervention and proud that Ibeju-Lekki has been chosen as a beneficiary community.

This will help in supporting our people and our local economy,” he said.

A representative of NASENI, Adesoji Oyedeji, described the project as one of the many steps the agency was taking to decentralise access to energy and foster innovation through local solutions.

In preparation for the distribution, selected youths from the community were trained in solar panel installation, thereby giving them not only the skills to support the rollout but also to create employment pathways within the same neighbourhoods the project is designed to serve.
