FG plans international cargo tracking to boost revenue

The Federal Government through the Nigerian Shippers Council said it has concluded plans to implement the International Cargo Tracking Note to enhance Nigeria’s security and boost revenue generation.

The Executive Secretary of the council, Mr Pius Akutah, disclosed this at a recent event in Lagos.

Represented by the Director of Special Duties at the NSC, Mustapha Zubairu, Akutah stated that the commencement of the ICTN was in line with President Bola Tinubu’s administration which seeks to diversify the revenue base of Nigeria’s economy..

“The NSC has unveiled plans to kick off the implementation of the ICTN. The platform is an automated scheme, which can determine the type and volume of cargo that are imported into the country through seaports within a specific period. The ICTN will also boost Nigeria’s security and enhance the Federal Government’s revenue from the seaports,” Akutah said.

Akutah also stated that efforts are also in place by NSC to implement some new innovations such as the adoption and implementation of Enterprise Content Management, to improve internal work processes and procedures of the council.

He emphasised that the global shift toward e-commerce and digital trade presents an opportunity for the NSC to enhance its digital capabilities and lead the way in automating port operations, customs processes, and supply chain management.

“Through the adoption of blockchain, Internet of Things, and other emerging technologies, the NSC can facilitate faster, more transparent, and cost-efficient trade,” he maintained.

According to him, the NSC’s involvement in fostering public-private partnerships in the development of port infrastructure, logistics facilities, and transport networks presents an opportunity for collaboration with private investors, “which could help alleviate infrastructure challenges.

“These partnerships could also extend to training and capacity-building programs for shippers, freight forwarders, and other industry stakeholders.”

He noted that as the global shipping industry increasingly focuses on sustainability, the NSC has an opportunity to lead Nigeria’s shipping sector toward green practices, including the adoption of eco-friendly vessels, renewable energy solutions, and waste management systems in the ports.

He said such efforts would not only improve Nigeria’s environmental standing but also make its maritime sector more attractive to international investors and trading partners.
