FCT Hospital retains international standard certification

Bwari General Hospital in the Federal Capital Territory has retained its International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO IS189:2022) certification, becoming Nigeria’s first and only government-owned medical laboratory to attain and maintain the ISO-151892033 accreditation.

The Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication and New Media to the FCT Minister, Lere Olayinka, announced this in a statement on Tuesday, where he said the certification reflected the administration’s commitment to improving healthcare delivery and reforms under the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Renewed Hope Agenda.

He added that retaining the certification demonstrated the Hospital Laboratory’s adherence to international practices and continuous improvements to meet evolving global standards, which the Wike-led FCT administration was committed to.

“Maintaining this accreditation required continuous improvements to meet evolving global standards, which the Wike-led FCTA is committed to. To achieve re-certification, the laboratory had to upgrade its procedures, train staff, and invest in modern equipment. Most importantly, implementation of a Quality Management System to ensure reliable and high-quality diagnostic services,” he said.

According to the statement, the Mandate Secretary for Health Services and Environment, Dr Dolapo Fasawe, said that the Bwari General Hospital Laboratory initially received ISO 15189:2012 accreditation in 2019 for four years (2019–2023), describing the accomplishment as “a significant milestone for Nigeria’s healthcare system”.

“The Mandate Secretary described the accomplishment as a significant milestone for Nigeria’s healthcare system and a testament to the commitment of the FCT Minister to improved healthcare delivery as well as dedication of the laboratory staff, adding that ‘it is hoped that this success would inspire other government hospitals to strive for similar excellence.’

“Fasawe affirmed that Bwari General Hospital Laboratory’s achievement demonstrated that Nigerian healthcare institutions were capable of meeting global standards.”, the statement read.
