Nigerian youths have been urged to reconsider migration as a solution to economic challenges, with experts warning many not to embark on the journey without adequate preparation.

The call came during the ‘APA Conference themed ‘Beyond Borders’, organised by the Redeemed Christian Church of God Fountain of Life Sanctuary in Lagos, recently.

According to the Nigeria Immigration Service, more than 3.6 million Nigerians migrated abroad between 2022 and 2023, driven largely by economic hardship and the search for better opportunities.

The International Organisation for Migration estimates around 17 million Nigerians currently live in the diaspora worldwide, making Nigeria one of Africa’s largest sources of emigrants. In 2024 alone, about 52,000 Nigerians moved to the United Kingdom.

At the conference, psychiatrist Dr Adeoye Oyewole said many migrants leave the country without clear plans, increasing their risk of encountering emotional and psychological difficulties abroad.

“Economic hardship, insecurity, and poverty are pushing people out, but it is not just about numbers; we must confront the emotional toll. Some migrants abroad end up in drugs, depression, or crime because their expectations clash with harsh realities,” Oyewole said.

The regional head of People and Culture at Stanbic IBTC, Funke Amobi, urged youths to reflect on their purpose before migrating.

“What is your purpose? What exactly is the greener pasture?” she queried.

The convener of the summit, Pastor Noruwa Edokpolo, said migration should not be seen as a blind escape.

“People move because of personal or environmental pressures. But migration should never be a blind escape. We must be clear on what we are walking into: our goals, our readiness, and the realities ahead,” Edokpolo said.
