‘Engineering bodies must be empowered to sanction errant members‘

The Chairman of Sparklight Construction Company, Toyin Adeyinka, has called for greater empowerment of regulatory bodies in the engineering sector to effectively sanction errant professionals and uphold standards in construction practices.

Speaking at the inauguration of the newly completed Lagos Commercial Court situated in the Lagos Island area of the state, Adeyinka emphasised the importance of professional discipline and strict adherence to engineering regulations.

Adeyinka, who spoke against the backdrop of building collapse in the country, also noted that engineering laws already exist to guide proper practice.

“There are various bodies that regulate the engineering world. These bodies should be further empowered to discipline engineers who fail to adhere to professional standards. Also, some laws are inherent in our regulations for engineers in doing what they are supposed to do,” he said.

He added that strict compliance with detailed engineering principles is non-negotiable for the integrity and safety of any structure.

“You don’t take anything for granted in construction. Every structure requires attention to detail and all the professional skills necessary to bring it to life,” he stated.

On the newly commissioned Lagos Commercial Court, Adeyinka described the project as a significant achievement for his team and a source of immense pride.

“It is a very joyful moment for us, starting a project from conception and seeing it through to successful completion. The structure, from the foundation to the finishing, demanded a great deal of engineering expertise,” he said.

The Lagos Commercial Court is a five-storey building with a pent floor. The first to fifth floors are designed to house multiple courtrooms and essential support facilities. The complex also includes a driver’s lodge, gatehouse, staff canteen, water treatment facility, and a panel room.
