Drama In Lagos NANS Poll As Ajayi Emerges Chairman

Comrade Ridwan Ajayi has emerged Chairman of the Lagos State Joint Campus Committee (JCC) of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) after a dramatic tie-breaker at the association’s convention.

Ajayi clinched victory at the convention held Saturday at the Federal College of Education (Technical), Akoka, polling five votes to tie with Comrade Odewunmi Quadri.

The deadlock was broken by the Convention Chairman, Comrade Sanni Sulaimon, who voted in Ajayi’s favour.

The keenly contested poll drew Presidents of Student Union Governments (SUGs) across major tertiary institutions in the state, underscoring growing demand for more responsive student leadership.

Security operatives, including personnel of the Department of State Services (DSS), Nigeria Police Force and the Nigerian Army, were deployed to ensure order.

Ten accredited SUG Presidents participated in the vote, representing institutions such as the University of Lagos, Lagos State University, Lagos State University of Science and Technology, Yaba College of Technology, and Lagos State University of Education.

Earlier, Sulaimon emerged as Convention Chairman and, in line with procedure, dissolved the Convention Planning Committee and the outgoing JCC executive led by Comrade AbdulRaheem AbdulQuadri. He also appointed Comrade Akinyanmi Abraham as Clerk of the Convention.

Ajayi, Quadri and Comrade Ashade Basit contested the chairmanship seat, with the tie triggering the constitutional provision for a deciding vote. Elections for other offices were deferred.

The outcome was contained in a communiqué signed by Comrade Sanni Sulaimon, Convention Chairman; Comrade Akinyanmi Abraham, Clerk of the Convention; Comrade Timileyin, Chairman of the Convention Planning Committee; and Comrade AbdulRaheem AbdulQuadri, outgoing Chairman of NANS JCC, Lagos State.

Stakeholders expressed optimism that Ajayi’s emergence will strengthen student representation and advocacy across the state.
