DKIPPI Launches Data Privacy Campaign in Nigeria

The Data & Knowledge Information Privacy Protection Initiative has launched the 11th edition of Data Privacy and Protection Month in Nigeria, underscoring the country’s growing concern over the handling of personal data.

The month-long campaign coincides with the global World Data Privacy Day on 28 January and aims to bolster awareness and compliance across government, businesses, and civil society. For Nigeria, where digital services are expanding rapidly, data protection is more than a regulatory obligation.

Speaking at the launch in Lagos on Tuesday, the President of DKIPPI, Tokunbo Smith, emphasised that data privacy is no longer optional, describing it as a pillar of national security, economic growth, and international trust.

“In an era where data is the most valuable resource of the 21st century, protecting personal information is a shared responsibility of government, businesses, and citizens,” he said.

The initiative highlights the importance of compliance with Nigeria’s Data Protection Act, signed into law in June 2023 by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and promotes cultural adoption of privacy practices beyond mere regulatory adherence.

During the month, DKIPPI plans extensive media campaigns across radio, television, and social media platforms, featuring daily privacy tips.

Workshops and training sessions will be conducted for Data Protection Officers in corporate organisations, NGOs, and government institutions. In addition, school competitions and educational outreach programmes will engage secondary and tertiary institutions to raise awareness among students. The initiative also includes professional partnerships with bodies like ISACA to certify and develop the next generation of data protection professionals, as well as community engagement programmes to empower citizens to protect their digital rights.

Smith said the campaign aims to improve institutional compliance, attract investment, create jobs, and strengthen Nigeria’s global image in data governance. “Privacy prepares for progress,” he noted. “By protecting personal data, we not only safeguard citizens but also drive innovation, trust, and sustainable development in Nigeria’s digital ecosystem.”

The 11th edition of Data Privacy Month underscores DKIPPI’s ongoing commitment to building a secure, inclusive, and rights-respectful digital future for Nigerians.
