‘Defenders Of Democracy Now Destroy It’

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has criticised some former pro-democracy activists, accusing them of abandoning the ideals they once championed.

In a social media post on Thursday, Obi expressed concern over what he described as a reversal of values among individuals who were once at the forefront of Nigeria’s democratic struggle during the military era.

“Yesterday’s defenders of democracy are today’s destroyers. What a shame,” he wrote.

The former Anambra State governor drew a comparison with the late Head of State, Sani Abacha, suggesting that those who once opposed military rule are now exhibiting tendencies worse than the regime they fought against.

“What an irony of history, that the acclaimed defenders of democracy and human rights… now find themselves worse than the man they opposed,” Obi stated.

He added that the development raises serious concerns about leadership and accountability, noting that power often reveals true character.
