Customs Seize Exotic Cars, Rice Worth N1.4bn in Smuggling Cr

The Nigeria Customs Service, Ogun 1 Area Command, has seized contraband worth N1,401,531,923.95 in a bid to combat smuggling and protect the nation’s economy and security. The seized items include three exotic cars, 4424 bags of foreign parboiled rice, 1936 parcels of cannabis sativa, and 105 used tyres.

The Ogun 1 Area Command Controller, Comptroller Godwin Otunla, disclosed this at a briefing held at the Idiroko on Thursday. The seized cars include a 2021 Rolls-Royce Ghost with a duty paid value of N905m, a 2014 Formatic Benz with a duty paid value of N21,423,400, and a 2018 model of Honda End of Discovery with a duty paid value of N32,200,000.

Otunla said the seizures were a result of the command’s firm commitment to combating smuggling and undermining the nation’s economy and security.

“The command will not relent in its crackdown against economic saboteurs,” he warned.

The comptroller also revealed that the command generated N45,054,191 in revenue in July 2025, representing a 27.47 per cent increase from the corresponding month in 2024. He attributed the growth to enhanced compliance drive, improved monitoring of border activities, and robust stakeholder engagement.

In line with the inter-agency collaboration framework, Otunla handed over the seized illicit drugs to the Commander of the NDLEA, Idiroko Special Command, Ekundayo Williams, for further investigation and necessary action.

Otunla reiterated that the fight against smuggling remains a collective responsibility and promised that the command would continue to build on collaboration, intelligence sharing, and innovation.

He warned smugglers and their collaborators that the command would not relent in its crackdown, saying, “We remain vigilant, resolute, and unyielding. No matter the sophistication of your tricks, our officers will continue to thwart your antics, and we shall bring the full weight of the law against you.”

The comptroller commended operatives of the command for their resilience and dedication while appreciating the support of other security agencies and patriotic members of the border communities who provide credible intelligence to aid the command’s operations.
