The Kwara Central Elders’ Caucus of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has warned against any attempt to zone the party’s governorship seat to the Kwara South Senatorial District, saying such a move would be vehemently resisted.
Rising from its extraordinary meeting in Ilorin, the state capital, the Caucus said zoning the governorship seat to Kwara South, which remains the largest beneficiary of the present administration in terms of plum federal appointments, would be nothing but crude injustice to the other two zones – Kwara Central and Kwara North.
The Caucus made its position known in a communique signed by its Chairman, Alhaji Mustapha Kobe; Coordinator, Alhaji Razaq Lawal, and Secretary, Alhaji Gani Alawo.
It listed the federal appointments domiciled in Kwara South to include the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Group Managing Director of the NNPCL, Directorship at NALDA and TetFund, and the Federal Character Commission (FCC), among others.
It noted that the people of Kwara Central and Kwara North Senatorial Districts condoned the lopsided federal appointments in favour of Kwara South because of their love for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, and their commitment to the growth and cohesiveness of the APC in the State.
The Caucus warned that the maturity and resilience of the people of Kwara Central and Kwara North should not be taken for granted.
“Such a decision would negatively affect the fortune of the ruling APC in the next general elections in the State.”
“For clarity, we want to say unequivocally that the bulk of the votes that gave our party, APC, victory in 2019 and 2023 came from Kwara Central and Kwara North Senatorial Districts. We must retain the bulk of votes ahead of the 2027 elections,” the Caucus counselled.
It, however, cautioned the powers that be at the federal and state levels against playing into the hands of the opposition by deciding to pick the APC gubernatorial candidate from Kwara South.
While acknowledging that the State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, has performed excellently well to keep the APC’s winning streak in Kwara, the Caucus said any sentiment that would set back the hand of the clock should not be condoned in the interest of all.
The Caucus restated its support for the re-election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and its determination to ensure that the APC wins all the available political seats in Kwara State during the 2027 general election
It prayed for God’s continued guidance for President Tinubu and Governor AbdulRazaq.
