CIBN, Bayero Partner on Professional Banking Qualifications

The Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Bayero University, Kano, to enhance the quality of banking and finance education and integrate professional qualifications into academic programmes.

The MoU was executed at the Institute’s headquarters, Bankers House, Victoria Island, Lagos, as part of CIBN’s ongoing B.Sc./ACIB Linkage Programme, which seeks to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical skills in Nigeria’s financial services sector.

Speaking at the signing ceremony on Tuesday, President and Chairman of the Council of CIBN, Pius Olanrewaju, described the partnership as a strategic initiative to strengthen collaboration between academia and the professional banking community. He said the programme allows eligible students in banking and finance and related disciplines to earn their academic degrees alongside the Chartered Banker professional qualification, significantly improving employability and readiness for the evolving demands of the financial services industry.

“This collaboration reflects our commitment to strengthening the nexus between town and gown, while ensuring graduates are not only academically sound but also professionally prepared to thrive in a rapidly changing global environment,” Prof. Olanrewaju stated.

He commended the management of Bayero University, led by Vice-Chancellor Haruna Musa, and the Department of Finance for embracing the initiative and demonstrating a commitment to professional relevance within the university’s academic offerings.

The CIBN President noted that the Institute has executed 83 Linkage Agreements nationwide, covering 59 universities and 24 polytechnics, with additional participation through postgraduate linkage arrangements. Bayero University successfully underwent CIBN accreditation in 2025, confirming that its Banking and Finance programme meets the required academic, infrastructural, and professional standards for the Linkage Programme.

Under the agreement, students will enjoy substantial exemptions in CIBN professional examinations, providing a faster, more efficient, and cost-effective pathway to qualification. Academic staff will also benefit, supporting continuous professional development and improving the quality of instruction.

Olanrewaju emphasised that the partnership aligns with CIBN’s LEGACY Agenda, which prioritises human capital development, youth empowerment, and the long-term sustainability of Nigeria’s financial system. He urged both institutions to ensure effective implementation through continuous engagement and prompt constitution of the Linkage Committee.

The MoU with Bayero University underscores CIBN’s commitment to promoting professional excellence, strengthening financial education, and contributing to the development of a globally competitive banking workforce in Nigeria.
