Billboard Crowns The Weeknd’s ‘Blinding Lights’ ‘Song Of The 21st Century’

In a historic recognition of chart dominance, The Weeknd’s ‘Blinding Lights’ has been named the Number 1 song of the 21st Century by Billboard.

The accolade comes from a ranking of the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart from January 2000 through December 2024, measuring overall performance rather than just weeks spent at the top.

The track, released in late 2019, achieved unprecedented longevity on the charts, spending 57 weeks in the top 10 of the Hot 100 and 86 weeks in the top 40. While it was officially at No. 1 for just four weeks, its consistent high performance helped it outpaced other major hits of the century.

Billboard noted that ‘Blinding Lights’ broke records previously held by iconic songs, showing how much people love The Weeknd’s 1980s-style electronic sound.

This is not the first time ‘Blinding Lights’ has made chart history. In 2021, it topped Billboard’s Greatest of All Time Hot 100 Songs list, surpassing long-standing legends like Chubby Checker’s ‘The Twist’.

‘Blinding Lights’ recognition as the song of the 21st century further establishes The Weeknd as one of the most influential voices in today’s Pop and R&B music.
