BIC awards winners of Art Master competition

Stationery brand BIC has given awards to Nigerian artists in the sixth edition of its Art Master Africa competition, a ballpoint pen art contest that spotlights creativity across the continent.

The competition, which attracted participants across the continent to interpret the theme Ubuntu; a philosophy of unity and interdependence, using BIC’s ballpoint pen, celebrated winners at an award event in Lagos on Tuesday.

A Nigerian artist Joseph Akpan, emerged as the regional winner for his artwork entitled Stronger Together while Joshua Makinde was named the national winner for his piece, Ayodeji.

The Art Master Competition noted the two creations stood out among numerous entries for their compelling representation of Africa’s resilience and cultural cohesion.

Akpan, who received a cash prize of $2,000, an exclusive feature in the Art Master Africa Metaverse Gallery, and a potential inclusion in BIC’s global Art Collection, expressed his gratitude for the recognition.

“This year’s theme, Ubuntu, holds deep meaning for me as it speaks to the power of unity and community in Africa. My artwork reflects this idea of collective strength, and I am proud it resonates with others. I appreciate BIC for celebrating African talent and empowering artists to tell our stories to the world,” he said.

Makinde, the national winner, received $500 for his work. He described the competition as an inspiring journey. “Being part of the Art Master Africa competition has given me an incredible platform to express my creativity. I encourage fellow artists to join and share their visions with the world,” he said.

The competition, which started in South Africa in 2017, has grown into a continent-wide platform showcasing African talent. This year, it recognised three regional winners and six national winners.

BIC’s Marketing Director for the Middle East and Africa, Gregory Alibaux, praised the exceptional entries, remarking “Art Master Africa is a testament to our commitment to unleashing creativity using writing tools. The submissions continue to amaze us every year, reflecting phenomenal talent from across the region.”

A judge in the competition, Gary Eric echoed this sentiment, noting the depth and creativity of the entries. “The artworks are a testament to the incredible talent on the African continent. Each piece connects to the broader message of unity and harmony,” Eric noted.

This year’s competition marked new milestones, including the introduction of the Art Master Africa Metaverse Gallery, a virtual platform showcasing works from past and present winners to a global audience.

BIC hailed Alliance Française in Nigeria, which it collaborated with, as playing a crucial role in supporting the local art community.
