Barcelona strengthened their grip on the La Liga title race on Saturday, with an emphatic 4-1 victory over city rivals Espanyol at Camp Nou, extending their lead at the top to nine points over Real Madrid.
Hansi Flick’s side capitalised on Madrid’s earlier slip, following their draw with Girona, by delivering a dominant derby performance that underlined their authority as defending champions with just seven games remaining.
Barcelona wasted little time asserting control, taking the lead inside nine minutes when Ferran Torres rose at the far post to head home from a pinpoint corner delivered by teenage star Lamine Yamal.
The early breakthrough set the tone, with the hosts dictating possession and creating chances with fluid attacking play.
The second goal arrived through a moment of brilliance from Yamal, whose outside-of-the-boot pass carved open the Espanyol defence.
