The National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers has announced plans to introduce a comprehensive Loss of Licence Insurance Cover for all Nigerian pilots and aircraft engineers.
The initiative aims to enhance the welfare and job security of aviation professionals nationwide.
This was made known via a statement signed by the association spokesperson, Blessing Ahmadu, and made available to newsmen on Tuesday.
According to NAAPE’s publicists, the development came to fruition in partnership with First Standard Insurance Brokers, with the aim to provide financial protection for pilots and engineers who lose their professional licences due to medical incapacity or other qualifying conditions that prevent them from continuing their aviation duties.
This arrangement is said to serve as a financial backup for practitioners in the case of professional disruption.
Speaking on the development, the President of NAAPE, Capt. Bunmi Gindeh, said the Association reached the decision after extensive consultations with stakeholders across the aviation industry.
Gindeh said, “Loss of Licence insurance for aviation professionals has long been a standard benefit in developed aviation markets worldwide.
“Our members face unique occupational risks that can abruptly end their careers. The goal of this initiative is to ensure that no pilot or engineer is left without financial support if they are declared medically unfit to continue their professional duties.”
He added that the scheme demonstrates NAAPE’s commitment to improving members’ welfare and promoting professional stability within the aviation sector.
“By introducing this important coverage in Nigeria, we are not only protecting individual professionals and their families, but also strengthening the aviation sector by ensuring that our highly trained workforce can maintain the highest safety standards, knowing their careers are financially protected,” Gindeh said.
He further noted that NAAPE is working to make the insurance affordable and accessible to all members, including those in private and charter operations, with the ultimate goal of standardising professional welfare across both public and private aviation sectors.
In his remarks, NAAPE Deputy President, Mudi Muhammad, said the initiative addresses a long-standing welfare gap in the industry.
Muhammad stated, “We have seen too many of our colleagues face financial hardship after losing their licences due to unexpected medical conditions.
“This insurance programme ensures that no Nigerian pilot or engineer will face such circumstances alone. It provides a safety net that every aviation professional deserves.”
NAAPE said details of enrolment procedures and premium structures will be released in the coming weeks, alongside nationwide sensitisation workshops to educate members on the benefits and registration process.
