Former Vice President of Nigeria and Chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar on Wednesday joined other top leaders of the party in a street protest in Abuja.

The protest follows a controversial court order that reportedly sacked the National Working Committee of the party led by Senator David Mark.

Also present at the protest were the ADC Interim National Secretary, Rauf Aregbesola, and former Kano State governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, alongside a large number of youths who took to the streets to express their dissatisfaction with the development carrying different placards.

The demonstration comes after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)’s decision not to recognise either the David Mark-led leadership or Nafiu Bala Gombe, who is laying claim to party’s leadership.

Protesters were seen chanting solidarity songs and calling for justice, as they marched through parts of the Federal Capital Territory to the INEC office.

In a follow-up statement shared via his social media page, Atiku said the protest was a deliberate and peaceful move to defend Nigeria’s democratic process.

“Myself and other leaders of the ADC are peacefully protesting against the partisanship of the electoral umpire. Our patriotic stance is aimed at safeguarding our democracy and preventing the enthronement of a dictatorship,” he said.
