Art Empowers Abuja IDPs With New Skills

Art in Heart Gallery Limited has taken its passion for creativity to over 200 internally displaced persons in New Kuchingoro, Abuja, with the aim of inspiring hope and transformation through art and crafts.

The initiative, designed to connect IDPs to their creative essence, enables them to produce art and crafts that will be beneficial within and beyond their community.

The National Coordinator and Creative Director of Art in Heart Gallery, Evans Chinedum, speaking during an outreach event in Abuja, said, “Art can help IDPs move beyond mere survival to a life where they can truly thrive.” He emphasised the power of art not just as a form of expression, but as a tool for healing, empowerment, and resilience.

The skills empowerment initiative teaches various art and craft skills, including face painting, tie and dye, necklace making, batik, and clothing production.

The Community Manager of Art in Heart Gallery, Kwaghe Stephanie, noted that beyond teaching skills, the initiative encourages IDPs to view art as a potential business venture. “Art is not only for expression, it’s also a lucrative business,” she said.

The initiative has received positive responses from the IDPs, with beneficiaries expressing gratitude for the training and pledging to make the best use of the knowledge gained.

The Chief Executive Officer of JMD, Jessica David, expressed her delight at the initiative and promised to donate books and dictionaries to support the IDPs’ learning process.

Tahir Ali, a staff member of the IDP camp, praised the initiative, saying, “I believe the skills acquired will lead to a brighter future for the participants.” Sunday Emmanuel, speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, expressed gratitude for the training and pledged to make the best use of the knowledge gained.

The Art in Heart Gallery is seeking partnerships with NGOs and other organisations to expand the scope of their empowerment efforts. “We are seeking partnerships to ensure sustainability and build on momentum,” Kwaghe Stephanie said.

The initiative is a testament to the power of art to transform lives and provide hope in the face of adversity. As the IDPs continue to benefit from the program, it is hoped that their newfound skills will enable them to build a brighter future for themselves and their community.
