Analysts list guidelines for smart home selection

With the growing adoption of smart home technology, experts have urged Nigerian homeowners and potential buyers to adopt a more informed approach when selecting properties equipped with smart features.

As smart homes become more integrated into the Nigerian real estate market, experts have outlined key guidelines to help consumers make the right choice.

Smart homes, which utilise advanced technology to automate and control systems such as lighting, security, heating, and appliances, are gaining traction among urban Nigerians.

However, with the rapid increase in the availability of such properties, many buyers and renters are still unsure of what to prioritise when choosing a smart home.

According to industry experts, a smart home is not just about having connected devices like smart thermostats, security cameras, and lighting.

“A true smart home is one where systems are integrated seamlessly to provide convenience, energy efficiency, and security,” said Ameh Daniel, a real estate consultant and smart home expert in Abuja.

To ensure that prospective buyers or renters select the right smart home, experts recommend considering several key factors.

One of the first considerations, according to tech experts, is ensuring the home’s devices are compatible with the systems buyers already use.

“Compatibility can make a significant difference in the overall user experience, especially for homeowners who have already invested in specific smart home ecosystems,” Daniel said.

Security is one of the most significant advantages of smart homes.

Experts emphasise the need for advanced security features, including smart locks, surveillance cameras, and alarm systems that can be remotely accessed and controlled.

A security consultant for smart home technologies, Simeon Kadiri, said, “A well-secured home should provide real-time alerts, remote monitoring, and integrated security devices. These are essential, especially in urban areas where security is a concern.”

He recommended the choice of homes equipped with motion detectors, video doorbells, and facial recognition systems, which add an extra layer of safety and peace of mind.

Energy efficiency is another critical aspect of smart homes. Many devices within smart homes, such as thermostats, lights, and appliances, can help conserve energy and reduce utility bills.

“One of the driving factors behind smart home adoption is the long-term savings on energy costs. A smart thermostat can learn your preferences and adjust heating or cooling based on your schedule, which helps in reducing unnecessary energy consumption,” Kadiri explained.

Homes with modern wiring, high-speed internet connectivity, and accessible control hubs are more likely to support newer devices and software as they become available.

According to real estate professionals, the quality of installation and post-purchase support is crucial for a smooth smart home experience.

“A poorly installed system can cause numerous technical issues. Ensure the installation is done by certified professionals and that the home builder or developer offers adequate support and maintenance for the systems in place,” added Daniel, who advised that homeowners should also enquire about warranties or support services in case of technical difficulties with smart devices.
