Sokoto State Governor Ahmed Aliyu has called on the Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development to urgently address the poor aviation lighting system at Sultan Abubakar III International Airport, Sokoto, ahead of the forthcoming 2026 Hajj airlift.
The governor made the call during a courtesy visit to the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo, at his office in Abuja.
Aliyu described the airport’s inadequate lighting system as a serious challenge hindering smooth operations, particularly during night hours.
According to him, the state is losing significant opportunities due to the inability of airlines to land at night as a result of the poor lighting system. He therefore appealed to the ministry to urgently intervene.
“We are concerned about the lack of a functional lighting system at Sultan Abubakar III International Airport, especially as Hajj operations approach, “Most of our flights to the Holy Land usually depart at night, and unless this issue is resolved, such operations may face serious difficulties,” he added.
