Alibaba Plans $1.5M Grants for African Startups in 2026

Alibaba Philanthropy and the Jack Ma Foundation are offering $1.5 m in grants to African entrepreneurs developing innovative solutions to the continent’s most pressing challenges as they launch the 8th edition of Africa’s Business Heroes.

The 2026 edition, themed ‘Defining Africa’s Future Today’, aims to support entrepreneurs across sectors such as climate-smart agriculture, digital finance, healthcare, logistics, manufacturing, and emerging technologies. ABH is designed to accelerate growth, provide mentorship, and elevate the visibility of Africa-led businesses with the potential to drive lasting economic transformation.

The Managing Director for Africa, Zahra Boateng-Baitie, said, “Africa’s future is being shaped by entrepreneurs who are addressing the continent’s most pressing challenges and unlocking its economic potential. Beyond the $1.5 m in grant funding, ABH equips founders with the strategic support they need to scale sustainable businesses, create jobs, and fuel inclusive growth.”

This year, ABH will expand its recognition pool to the top 100 finalists and increase on-the-ground engagement in ten African markets, prioritising under-represented countries such as Namibia, Tunisia, and Zambia. Past top 10 finalists also gain access to a fully sponsored learning experience at Alibaba’s campus in Hangzhou, China.

Applications are open to founders who are African citizens or legal residents, lead registered businesses with at least three years of traction, and demonstrate a commitment to positive societal impact. Since its launch, ABH has received over 30,000 applications annually, cementing its reputation as one of Africa’s leading platforms for solution-driven entrepreneurs.
