Former Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), who was appointed as Nigeria’s ambassador to the United States (US), Kayode Are, has formally assumed office after presenting his letter of credence to the US government and President Donald Trump.
Sunday Telegraph gathered that Kayode Are officially began his diplomatic assignment on Thursday, May 21, marking the commencement of his tenure as Nigeria’s envoy to Washington DC.
Are, an indigene of Ogun State, was among the non-career nominees alongside Aminu Dalhatu from Jigawa State and Ayodele Oke from Oyo State.

His appointment followed the ambassadorial nominations forwarded to the Senate in November 2025 by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Tinubu had initially submitted a list of 32 nominees for confirmation before sending an additional request seeking approval for three non-career ambassadors.
The Senate later confirmed 64 ambassadorial nominees in December 2025, comprising 34 career diplomats and 30 non-career appointees.
Following the confirmation, Tinubu approved Are’s deployment to Washington in January, officially designating him as Nigeria’s ambassador to the United States.
