Sokoto Govt Upgrades, Renames College Of Basic, Remedial Studies

The Sokoto State Government has signed into law a bill passed by the State House of Assembly upgrading and renaming the State College of Basic and Remedial Studies as the Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko College of Technology and Advanced Studies.

A statement issued by the state Ministry of Higher Education said the bill was officially signed into law on Thursday, May 14, 2026.

This was disclosed on Tuesday by the Commissioner for Higher Education, Prof. Isa Muhammad Maishanu, during a briefing in his office.

According to the commissioner, the renaming and upgrading of the institution are aimed at immortalising former Governor Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko in recognition of his immense contributions to the development of the education sector in Sokoto State and Nigeria at large.

Prof. Maishanu explained that the institution has now been upgraded to run Diploma and Higher National Diploma (HND) programmes, in line with the present administration’s vision to expand access to quality and advanced education in the state.

The commissioner also commended Governor Ahmad Aliyu Sokoto for taking the decision at the appropriate time, describing it as a worthy recognition of commitment and service to educational advancement in the state.

He further revealed that the governing council of the institution will soon be constituted by the executive governor as part of efforts to strengthen the administration and academic development of the college.
