There are strong indications that the former Governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi, will on Wednesday emerge as the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC)’s sole presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 general elections.
This is even as the party announced the end to the sale of Expression of Interest and Nomination Forms for its 2027 presidential ticket.
Sources within the party disclosed that Obi, a former Labour Party Presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, was the only aspirant to purchase the presidential forms before the deadline expired.
However, the party, on Monday, announced a one-week extension for the collection of Expression of Interest Forms for governorship, Senate, House of Representatives and State House of Assembly aspirants.
The NDC National Secretary, Ikenna Morgan Enekweizu, said the deadline, initially fixed for 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 17, 2026, had been extended to midnight on Sunday, May 24, 2026, for all other elective offices except the presidency.

The party also announced that the collection and submission of nomination forms for cleared aspirants would commence on May 20 and close on May 26.
The NDC warned that no further extension would be granted and urged aspirants to strictly comply with the party’s timetable and guidelines.
It directed all aspirants to appear before the screening committee with relevant documents, including educational certificates, birth certificates or declarations of age, voter’s cards, party membership cards, passport photographs and curriculum vitae.
The statement added that all submitted documents must be provided in six copies.
According to the party, the screening process would consider factors such as competence, character, local realities and the wishes of the electorate, while also taking into account the party’s affirmative action policy for women, youths and persons living with disabilities.
The NDC further encouraged aspirants to embrace consensus arrangements, stressing that only aspirants cleared by the screening committee would qualify to obtain nomination forms.
With the development, Obi, who recently defected from the African Democratic Congress to the NDC, is expected to emerge as the party’s consensus presidential candidate for the 2027 election.
