Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, on Wednesday joined Catholic faithful and clergy across Nigeria for the burial of the late Bishop of Abakaliki Diocese, Peter Nworie Chukwu.
The requiem Mass and interment, held in Abakaliki, drew religious leaders, government officials, and mourners from across the country.
In a statement shared after the ceremony, Obi described the late bishop’s passing as a profound loss to his family, the Catholic Diocese of Abakaliki, and the Universal Church.
He noted, however, that there is comfort in the testimonies of Bishop Chukwu’s life, which he said was marked by dedicated service to God and humanity.

During the homily, Lucius Iwejuru Ugorji reflected on the inevitability of death, describing the late cleric as a courageous and devoted shepherd who lived a life of sacrifice, service, and fidelity to his calling.
Also speaking, Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru, described Bishop Chukwu as a monumental loss to the state, noting that his leadership and influence transcended religious boundaries.
Representing the Holy Father, the Apostolic Nuncio to Nigeria, Michael Francis Crotty, highlighted the unity of the Universal Church in mourning the late bishop.
Obi also commended the Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese, Ernest Obodo, for ensuring a smooth and dignified funeral ceremony.
He prayed for the repose of the late bishop’s soul, describing his life as one of impact and unwavering commitment to faith and service.
