The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Enugu on Saturday conducted parallel state congresses, each producing its own executive committee.
The development underscores deep-seated divisions within the party following the recent coalition of political interests that converged under the ADC platform, reportedly led at the national level by former Senate President, David Mark.
Tensions had been building in the state chapter of the party, particularly between new entrants— largely from the Labour Party—and the original ADC structure led by Mrs. Stella Chukwuma.
The newcomers were said to have pushed for her removal as state chairman, a move resisted by longstanding party members and allies who backed her leadership.
However, mounting pressure from national stakeholders reportedly forced Mrs. Chukwuma to align with a third faction linked to Ibe Kachikwu, which claims legitimacy as the original ADC bloc.
Efforts to get her reaction were unsuccessful, as she told journalists she was unavailable to speak while aboard a flight.
Meanwhile, a faction believed to be loyal to former presidential candidate Peter Obi held its congress in Emene, where Prof. Austin Akubue emerged as the state chairman.
The Akubue-led group is reportedly backed by prominent political figures including former Enugu State governor, Okwesilieze Nwodo, ex-Senator Gil Nnaji, and Chief Chinyeaka Ohaa.
However, the process was not without controversy, as Senator Nnaji briefly attended the congress venue but exited in protest over the composition of the executive list.
In a separate development, another faction aligned with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar held its congress at a hotel in Independence Layout, Enugu.
