The Sokoto State chapter of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has donated food items, detergents, footwear, mats, and clothes to residents of the Guiwa Low-Cost Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in Sokoto metropolis as part of its 2026 Law Week celebration.

The gesture was extended to the beneficiaries by a high-powered delegation led by the chapter Chairperson, Barrister Rashidat Mohammed, and the Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, Prof. Abdullahi Ibrahim, SAN.

Speaking at the event, renowned lawyer and retired Permanent Secretary Hajiya Aisha Mohammed Dantsoho said the gesture was to alleviate the suffering of the IDPs.

While calling on them to regard their fate as an inevitable act of divinity, she urged fairness and equity in the distribution of the items.

Dantsoho also called on them to remain patient and be fervently prayerful for the urgent restoration of sustainable peace and unity in the country.

Also speaking, the NBA Chairperson, Mrs Rashidat Mohammed, stated that the gesture was to express support to the IDPs in view of the challenging situation they live in.

She said, “They are here as a result of the recurring security challenges in the country. While we commend the government, more should be done to make them more comfortable.

“There is also an urgent need for the establishment of conventional IDP camps, with the full complement of infrastructure needed, like schools, clinics, conveniences, and other social amenities.”

The NBA Chairperson also appealed to affluent Nigerians to complement the efforts of the government in providing for the needs of the IDPs.

She added that the responsibility of ensuring the security of the lives and property of citizens is not the duty of the government alone.

The Women Leader of the camp, Mrs Lami Umar, applauded the association for coming to their aid, promising to be fair and just in the distribution of the donated items.
