Obidients Seek Probe Over Attack On Protesting Members In Ojo

Members of the Lagos State chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Labour Party (LP)/Obidient Coalition has reacted to the violent disruption of what it described as a peaceful protest in Ojo Federal Constituency, warning that the incident poses a serious threat to democratic expression and civic participation.

In a press statement issued on Monday, the coalition, said the protest, convened by stakeholders of the ADC, LP, and allied civic groups, were intended as a lawful and peaceful demonstration of grievances concerning ongoing political developments within the constituency.

According to eyewitness accounts, the protest was abruptly cut short when suspected armed thugs reportedly descended on participants, attacking demonstrators and causing widespread panic.

“Several individuals, including community leaders and activists, were said to have sustained injuries, while others fled the scene for safety.

The coalition raised grave concerns over allegations that individuals linked to the office of the member of the House of Representatives representing Ojo Federal Constituency, Hon. Seyi Sowunmi, may have been involved in orchestrating the disruption.

It emphasised that such claims warrant urgent, independent, and transparent investigation.

Describing the incident as “a troubling escalation of political intimidation,” the coalition warned against the normalisation of violence in Lagos politics, stressing that such actions undermine democratic norms and erode public trust in governance.

“The right to peaceful assembly is a cornerstone of any functioning democracy. Lagos must not become a state where citizens are subjected to violence for exercising their constitutional freedoms,” the statement read.

The coalition therefore called on the Nigeria Police Force and the Lagos State Government to immediately launch a thorough investigation, apprehend those responsible, and ensure that justice is served without bias or delay.

Furthermore, it urged political actors across party lines to denounce violence and embrace constructive, issue-based engagement, particularly as political activities intensify ahead of forthcoming electoral processes.

Reaffirming its solidarity with victims of the attack, the ADC–LP/Obidient Coalition pledged to continue advocating for accountability, justice, and the protection of democratic rights across Lagos State.
