A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Senator Ishaku Abbo, has attributed the party’s prolonged leadership crisis to internal disagreements and failure to honour prior arrangements.
Speaking on the dispute, Abbo said the crisis stemmed from a breakdown in an earlier agreement on the sharing of party positions across geopolitical zones, alleging that the deal was not respected by the current leadership.
The former lawmaker added that under the arrangement, a key position in the Northeast was meant for Nafiu Bala Gombe, but was not implemented as agreed.
He said, “The agreement made with the legacy party was to cede certain positions to them from each geopolitical zone.
“However, the David Mark leadership reneged on the arrangement, and instead, installed Babachir David Lawal as the National Vice Chairman, Northeast,” Abbo said.
The former lawmaker also alleged that remarks attributed to Lawal worsened tensions within the party.

He claimed Lawal “arrogantly, and seemingly self-servingly argued that Nafiu Bala is a small boy to be given a National Vice Chairman in a zone that has the former Vice President and former SGF.”
According to Abbo, the fallout led to further division after Bala rejected an alternative offer.
“In a rather radical response, Nafiu Bala rejected the lesser position offered; felt belittled and insulted by BD Lawal, and therefore, went ahead with the plot to bring down the whole ADC roof,” he said.
The crisis, he noted, has continued to destabilise the party, warning that failure to resolve underlying issues could deepen divisions.
Meanwhile, Abba Kabir Yusuf dismissed the party’s chances in Kano State, describing it as politically irrelevant in the state.
“Kano remains firmly under the control of the ruling political structure of the All Progressives Congress, backed by the overwhelming support of the people,” he said.
He added that the party would not pose any serious challenge in future elections, expressing confidence in the ruling party’s strength ahead of 2027.
“We will rally solid support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and I am very optimistic that APC will, in sha Allah, win all the elective positions in 2027,” Yusuf stated.
Amid the ongoing crisis, the National Democratic Congress has invited Bala Mohammed to join its ranks, promising a platform free of internal disputes.
“Our party has no leadership tussles or court cases. We guarantee fairness, transparency, and a level playing field for all members,” a party official said.
The ADC crisis has intensified in recent weeks, with legal battles and leadership disputes raising concerns about the party’s stability ahead of the next electoral cycle.
