Experts Urge Govt Support for Nigerian Tech Sector Growth

Tech experts have called on the Federal Government to strengthen power supply and support indigenous technology firms following the acquisition of ZuumHost by HoganHost, a web hosting platform.

The call comes amid growing concerns over the sustainability of Nigeria’s digital infrastructure as local firms continue to expand operations in a challenging business environment.

The acquisition, disclosed in a statement by HoganHost’s Chief Executive Officer, Joseph Hogan, signals further consolidation in the country’s web hosting and domain services market, as well as efforts to scale capacity to meet rising demand.

Under the new arrangement, Hogan will serve as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of ZuumHost, while HoganHost co-founder, Atim Hogan, will take on the role of Vice Chairman.

ZuumHost, founded by Emmanuel Oghenekparobor Ovwighorienta, is an accredited registrar under the Nigeria Internet Registration Association and provides domain registration and hosting services to businesses and digital entrepreneurs.

Speaking in an interview with The PUNCH, Ovwighorienta described the deal as a strategic decision aimed at ensuring continuity and future growth.

“I would say the acquisition of ZuumHost by HoganHost was a strategic decision driven by both growth and continuity. As the founder, I reached a point where I wanted to explore and build other innovative tech products,” he said.

He added that HoganHost’s infrastructure and experience made it well-positioned to take the brand to the next level while maintaining service quality for existing customers.

While acknowledging the growth potential in the sector, Ovwighorienta stressed the need for government intervention to address structural challenges affecting digital businesses.

“Power stability is critical. Digital infrastructure cannot thrive without reliable electricity,” he said.

He also urged the government to support local tech ecosystems through policies that encourage the growth of data centres, cloud services, and startups, noting that this would reduce reliance on foreign infrastructure and strengthen the economy.
