The Defence Headquarters has denied allegations that the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, advocated for leniency towards terrorists in his remarks on Operation SAFE CORRIDOR.
Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila UBA, described the claims as “misleading” and “a gross misinterpretation”.
He clarified that Operation SAFE CORRIDOR is a deradicalisation, rehabilitation, and reintegration programme for low-risk former combatants, not an amnesty programme.
“The CDS’s comments were made within the context of a professional military doctrine lecture, emphasising multi-dimensional conflict resolution,” UBA explained. “Rehabilitation complements battle- field successes, not replaces them.”
UBA emphasised that the Nigerian Armed Forces remain committed to neutralising active terrorists and protecting citizens, with Operation SAFE CORRIDOR targeting those who have voluntarily disengaged and met strict criteria.
