The Officer-in Charge/ Chief of Field Office (CFO), UNICEF Field Office, Kano, Dr Karanveer Singh, has charged Journalists to do more in freeing children suffering from, early marriage, genital cutting, rape, trafficking, prostitution, and Child Labour.
He also asked the Nigeria Media to beam its searchlights on issues such as Children being casualties of war and violence, victims of racial discrimination, refugees and displaced children.
The UNICEF Chief gave this advice during a three day workshop organised for Journalists in Dutse, Jigawa State, where issues of malnutrition, diseases due to lack of vaccinations, lack of clean water, inadequate sanitation, violence, and the effects of drug abuse were brought on the front burner.
He said that such issues are what Journalists should fully be helping to solve. Dr Singh noted that journalists play a vital role in safeguarding the rights and dignity of children, describing them as leaders of tomorrow, whose interest has to be protected by the media.
According to him, northern Nigeria is currently facing significant challenges on protection of children’s rights, making it even more important to ensure children grow up in a safe and supportive environment.
