…Says Alia has betrayed trust of the people, failed to secure lives and property
A chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and a close ally of Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State, Dr Simon Ater, has defected to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to run for the 2027 governorship seat.
Dr Ater, who met with the immediate past governor, where high-level talks were perfected concerning his governorship ambition, disclosed that his decision was driven by what he described as the “Glaring failure” of the current administration under Governor Alia, accusing him of falling short of the expectations and aspirations of the Benue people.
“My decision to leave the APC is both deliberate and necessary. The current administration of Hyacinth Alia has not only fallen short of expectations, but it has also betrayed the trust of the people in many ways, particularly in securing the lives and property of the people.
“Benue deserves purposeful leadership, not excuses”.
He maintained that “the PDP remains the only viable platform with the structure, experience, and people-oriented philosophy to rescue the state”.
Dr Ater opined that his political direction has been shaped by Chief Ortom’s leadership, particularly his firm resistance to open grazing and his industrialisation agenda, which, according to him, created jobs and strengthened the local economy.
Taking a strong stance on security and land ownership, Dr Ater vowed that, if elected governor, he would consolidate on Ortom’s legacy by defending Benue lands against what he termed “external aggression” and ensuring the protection of indigenous communities.
“I am inspired by the courageous leadership of Chief Samuel Ortom, especially his firm stance on protecting Benue lands and livelihoods. That legacy must not be abandoned. If given the mandate, I will defend every inch of Benue land, protect our people, and build on the foundation already laid to create jobs and restore dignity to governance”.
Responding, Chief Ortom described Dr Ater’s decision as courageous and timely, noting that it reflects a broader awakening among well-meaning political actors in the state.
He described Dr Ater as a vibrant and determined young leader with the capacity to contribute meaningfully to the PDP’s renewed push for power.
The former governor assured that the PDP would provide a fair and transparent platform for all aspirants, emphasising that internal democracy and unity would be critical to the party’s success in the 2027 elections.
“The PDP is open to all who are committed to justice, equity, and the protection of our people. Dr Ater’s decision to join the PDP is a bold and patriotic step that reflects the growing dissatisfaction with the current administration in Benue State”.
