The first plenary sitting of the Edo State House of Assembly for the 2026 legislative year was abruptly halted on Tuesday following the discovery of bullets and gunshot holes on the roof of the Assembly chamber.

Lawmakers who arrived for the scheduled sitting were met with a tense atmosphere after news of the shooting incident spread through the complex, prompting immediate concern over safety within the chamber.

Addressing journalists at the Assembly complex, the Majority Leader of the House, Hon. Jonathan Ebamewu, confirmed that security agencies had taken over the matter, leading to the postponement of the sitting until further notice.

He said:
*”We were ready for sitting today when we were alerted to the incident. I immediately called the Commissioner of Police and the DSS, and we have left everything to them to investigate and provide a complete report on the matter.

For now, everything is calm, and we are eager to resume our legislative activities. Unfortunately, because of this incident, we will not meet today as we want to give security agents the opportunity to comb the chamber thoroughly and produce a report satisfactory to everyone.

However, be assured that all is calm in the House, and we remain focused. We will certainly return to conduct our normal plenary sessions.”*

Hon. Ebamewu emphasized that the suspension was necessary to allow security personnel to ensure the safety of lawmakers and staff before legislative activities resume.

As of the time this report was filed, operatives of the Edo State Police Command were seen conducting a thorough sweep of the chamber as part of ongoing investigations into the incident.
