New season of African building construction show announced

Skillers League, the organisers of The Builders Show, have unveiled a new season of the Pan-African construction competition reality series, themed ‘The Rise of the Artisan’, with a call to inspire pride in skilled work and reposition craftsmanship as the future of work for young Africans.

In a statement, the organisers noted that the new season aims to challenge long-held perceptions that technical skills are a fallback option, as the show places artisans at the centre of mainstream entertainment, national pride and economic relevance.

They described it as Africa’s first league-format construction competition reality series, noting that the programme brings together national teams of skilled builders from across the continent to compete in high-pressure construction challenges that test craftsmanship, teamwork and speed.

It added the show blends sport, storytelling and patriotism, as teams representing their countries battle through a structured competitive format for the title of Africa’s Skills Champion.

Firms iCreate Africa and Blink Africa are the producers of the show.

According to the organisers, the new season will feature eight African countries, each represented by a national team made up of elite construction professionals. The trades on display will include carpentry, plumbing, tiling, electrical work, welding, masonry and architectural leadership.

The teams will progress through increasingly demanding rounds, with only one country emerging as champion at the end of the competition.

The new season builds on the foundation laid by the debut edition, which featured teams from Nigeria, Ghana, Togo and the Benin Republic.

The first season aired on DStv, GOtv and StarTimes, achieved global distribution across more than 50 platforms and was screened in cities including Berlin, Lagos, London, Kenya, Botswana and the United States.

The organisers added that the series also earned international recognition, with a nomination for Best Unscripted Series at the African Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards.

Team Togo currently holds the title of Defending African Skills Champions, setting what the organisers described as the competitive benchmark as the league expands into a new chapter.

The Executive Producer, Bright Jaja, noted that the initiative was created to respond to shifts in the global labour market, stating, “We created Skillers League because the future of work is changing, and Africa has a role to play in shaping it.”

Jaja noted that while technology and artificial intelligence continue to disrupt many traditional jobs, skilled trades remain indispensable globally.

He added, “As technology and artificial intelligence continue to replace many traditional jobs, skilled trades remain essential. Across the world, there is a growing shortage of skilled workers, and Africa is uniquely positioned to fill that gap.”

Jaja said the new season was designed to elevate craftsmanship and celebrate artisans as role models for young people across the continent.

“This show is about elevating craftsmanship and creating a new class of influencers who will change perception, inspire pride, and show young people that skill is not a fallback but the future of work,” he said.

He added that the platform would showcase African talent, products, and culture to the world, to prove “that African artisans can compete, collaborate, and lead on a global stage.”
