NIS enhances transparent operations at Nigerian ports


The Nigerian Immigration Service has flagged off the fourth edition of its nationwide sensitisation corruption campaign.

Speaking in Apapa on Monday during the campaign themed, ‘Innovating for transparency and efficiency, strengthening service delivery and combating corruption through reforms’, the Comptroller-General of the Immigration Service, Kemi Nandap, stated that technology innovations have reduced human interference, minimised delays, and curtailed opportunities for corruption.

Nandap, who was represented at the event by the Controller of Immigration at Lagos Port, Clementina Ogbudu, also stated that through strict enforcement of ethical codes and disciplinary measures, the NIS has sent a strong message that corruption has no place in the Nigeria Immigration Service.

According to the NIS boss, the campaign is not just a slogan; it is a call to action, adding that in recent years, the Service has embraced technology to simplify and secure its processes.

“This campaign is not just a slogan; it is a call to action. It reflects our collective resolve to build a service that is modern, transparent, and efficient; one that stands as a bulwark against corruption and inefficiency, and one that delivers services with integrity and excellence. In recent years, the NIS has embraced technology to simplify and secure its processes. From the automation of passport applications to the deployment of biometric systems at our borders, these innovations have reduced human interference, minimised delays, and curtailed opportunities for corruption,” she stated.

The NIS boss reiterated that by digitalising operations, the Service has not only enhanced transparency but also ensured that its services meet the expectations of citizens in a rapidly changing world.

“We have also restructured our service centres to prioritise speed, fairness, and accountability. Citizens now experience shorter waiting times, clearer procedures, and improved customer service, hallmarks of an institution committed to efficiency. These reforms are proof that when systems are designed with transparency in mind, efficiency naturally follows,” the NIS boss added.

She also maintained the agency’s commitment to combating corruption.

“Equally important has been our unwavering commitment to combating corruption. Through strict enforcement of ethical codes and disciplinary measures, we have sent a strong message: corruption has no place in the NIS. Our officers are being trained and retrained to uphold integrity as the cornerstone of their duty. This campaign reinforces that message, reminding us all that transparency is not optional; it is essential,” she said.

She mentioned that the agency has strengthened collaboration with sister agencies, international partners, and civil society to ensure that its reforms are not only internal but also part of a wider national and global effort to combat corruption and enhance transparency.

“These partnerships have expanded our capacity, improved oversight, and aligned our service delivery with international best practices,” she stated, urging officers, stakeholders, and citizens to join hands with the agency in the fight against corruption.

She stressed that transparency is not the responsibility of one leader or one institution; it is the duty of all, adding that efficiency is not achieved by reforms alone; it is sustained by the commitment of each individual to do what is right.

The NIS is the government agency responsible for border security and migration control, including at maritime entry and exit points such as seaports.

It was established under the Immigration Act and plays a central role in ensuring the safe, orderly movement of people and compliance with immigration laws at ports.

At seaports, immigration duties include crew documentation, migration control, managing stowaways, and enforcement of maritime entry rules.
