Nigeria has emerged as the largest African exporter of crude oil to the United States between January and August 2025, shipping more than half of the continent’s total crude exports to the American market.

According to a statement released on Tuesday by the US Mission in Nigeria, the country exported 33.23 million barrels of crude oil to the US during the eight months, with the shipments valued at about $2.57bn.

The US Mission disclosed the figures in a post on its official X handle, noting Nigeria’s dominant position among African oil exporters to the US market.

“Did you know that Nigeria was the leading African exporter of crude oil to the United States between January and August 2025, shipping 33.23 million barrels worth $2.57bn?.

That’s more than half of all African crude oil exports to the United States during that period,” the statement said.

The mission added that the volume of trade underscores the strength of economic relations between the two countries, stressing that the partnership delivers mutual benefits. “Our strong trade ties create jobs and drive prosperity on both sides of the Atlantic,” the statement said.

The development comes amid growing trade relations between the two countries across other sectors.

PUNCH Online previously reported that the US Agricultural Counsellor, Chris Bielecki, said agricultural trade between Nigeria and the US is projected to reach $700m in 2025.

Meanwhile, Sunday PUNCH reported that Nigeria’s imports of crude oil from the US increased by 153 per cent in the first nine months of 2025, citing data from the US Energy Information Administration.
