Mr Jollof Apology: United Nigeria Continues Probe

Despite apologies from Nigerian comedian Freedom Atsepoyi, commonly known as Mr Jollof, and social media activist Martins Otse, widely known as Verydarkman, Nigeria’s carrier, United Nigeria, has stated that the investigation into the matter continues.

In separate apology videos, both men recounted their versions of the incident. They pleaded for forgiveness from United Nigeria Airlines as well as the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority, acknowledging the disruption caused.

PUNCH Online previously reported that the duo may face criminal charges following the clash, which occurred inside an aircraft and resulted in delays for passengers.

Speaking on Instagram on Tuesday, Mr Jollof detailed the circumstances that led to the confrontation, claiming that he is not violent but acted solely in self-defence.

He also apologised to the passengers whose travel plans were affected, along with the airline and the NCAA.

“I want to use this medium to sincerely apologise to the NCAA, United Nigeria Airlines, and the passengers. I was only defending myself. You guys saw what happened. I am very sorry if I delayed your appointment. I’m very sorry. Pardon me. I am not that kind of person; it will never happen again. And to my lovely wife… I know you are proud of me. And to my kids, I’m sorry; Daddy will never do this again,” he said.

While Mr Jollof pledged never to be involved in such an altercation again, VeryDarkMan admitted that he could not make the same promise, only that such conduct would never occur on an aircraft or in any other public setting.

Apologising to passengers and the airline, VDM expressed embarrassment over his behaviour.

He said, “What happened yesterday was not supposed to happen, and I take full responsibility for it. A lot of people on that flight had better things to do, but because of that little irresponsibility from my end, their flight was delayed.

“Some on that flight may have medical emergencies, some may have business contracts to sign, and I do not know what that delay may have caused them. I really want to apologise for everything. I am sorry. I will not say it is not in my character to fight, but I will just apologise, especially to one mama on the plane who kept saying, ‘VeryDarkMan, go and sit down.’ Even though people saw what happened on social media, I acted really irresponsibly.

“I apologise to people who may be looking up to me or who really felt disappointed about what happened yesterday. I am really, really sorry. I cannot guarantee that it will not happen again, but I can only guarantee that it will not happen on a plane, bus, or any public place that will stop people from going to their destination of business or interest.”

Meanwhile, in a chat with the spokesperson of the airline, Chibuike Uloka told The PUNCH that despite the apology, the investigation was ongoing and the airline was yet to take a position on the fracas.

When asked if the airline had taken a position on the development considering the pair’s apology, Uloka said, “Investigations are still ongoing.”
