An Ibadan-based entrepreneur and founder/Chief Executive Officer of Sooyah Bistro, Olamidun Ogundoyin, has revealed how N20,000 invested in a small-scale business marked a turnaround in her business life.
Ogundoyin, while underscoring the relevance of the SMEs to the economic growth at the grand opening of another branch of Sooyah Bistro at Akala Expressway in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, on Saturday, urged Nigerian youth to distance themselves from the Japa syndrome; rather, they should channel their energies towards small-scale businesses.
She submitted that if a N20,000 investment could transform her life, there is no mountain that is insurmountable.
Ogundoyin said, “I started Sooyah Bistro in 2018 as a side hustle in Lagos with just N20,000 worth of stock and a suya mallam. The original idea was to spread the joy of Nigerian food and reimagine how we eat suya. We have since grown organically, no bank loans, no investors, just pure passion and the incredible support of our customers.
“The Akala express outlet is Sooyah Bistro’s second branch in Ibadan, with the first located on Ring Road. The remaining nine branches are in Lagos. The company currently has over 120 staff, and plans are underway to open a third Ibadan branch in Bodija as well as expand to Abuja and other parts of Nigeria.”
Describing Sooyah Bistro as “Suya wey get master’s degree,” the founder noted that the brand is about celebrating Nigerian culture through food, offering innovative options like Suya burgers, Suya shawarma, Suya rice bowls, and more.
“I want to advise Nigerian youths to start small. Be passionate. Be dedicated. I began with just N20,000 in Lagos, with no formal funding, and today we’re celebrating our 11th branch. Your passion is more valuable than money,” she urged.
Guests at the grand opening were treated to great food, music, good vibes, and the signature Sooyah Bistro flavour that has captivated taste buds across the country.
