The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has commended the collaborative efforts of the Nigeria Customs Service in the fight on drug trafficking.
This was contained in a weekend statement by the Public Relations Officer of the NCS, Federal Operations Unit, Zone A, Ikeja, Hussaini Abdullahi.
According to the statement, the Chairman and Chief Executive of the NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (Rtd), stated this when he received 25 kilogrammes of ice crystal methamphetamine, with an estimated street value of N562m, intercepted by officers of the FOU A.
The statement explained that officers of the unit intercepted the substance suspected to be hard drugs along Gbaji-Seme Road.
Speaking of the contrabands, the Customs Area Controller in charge of the FOU A, Mohammed Shuaibu, said the interception took place at about 1700 hours on October 17 “when a patrol team, acting on credible intelligence, apprehended one Uduak Monday. The suspect was reportedly found in possession of a nylon bag tightly wrapped with Cellotape.”
“Upon examination, the contents of the bag were discovered to be crystal methamphetamine weighing 25 kilogrammes, with an estimated street value of N562.5m,” Shuaibu stated.
According to the CAC, the seizure underscores the unit’s unwavering commitment to combating smuggling in all its forms and also highlights the importance of robust inter-agency collaboration.
Shuaibu added that the unit remained resolute in its mission to work in synergy with relevant agencies and stakeholders to dismantle smuggling networks operating within the zone.
He also disclosed that the seized suspect had been handed over to the NDLEA for further investigation and prosecution.
While receiving the exhibit and the suspect on behalf of the Chairman and Chief Executive of the NDLEA, the Commander of Narcotics, Lagos State Strategic Command, CN Abubakar Liman, commended the collaborative efforts of the NCS in the war on drug trafficking.
“The contributions of the NCS in the ongoing war on drug trafficking are remarkable. We will continue to update the unit as the trial of the suspect progresses in court,” Liman said.
Liman also commended the unit for deepening the realisation of the memorandum of understanding signed between the two agencies.
Drug trafficking is a major security, public health and governance issue in Nigeria; the NDLEA reports large‐scale seizures, thousands of arrests and destruction of illicit drug stockpiles. The border and port environment (seaports, land crossing points) are key vulnerabilities. Traffickers exploit poorly monitored entry points, hidden containers, vehicles, etc. Cooperation between agencies like NDLEA and Customs enhances detection. One agency may intercept or detect suspicious cargo/containers (NCS) and hand them over to the narcotics enforcement agency (NDLEA) for investigation, prosecution, and destruction.
