Nigeria Launches Sex Education Campaign for Youth Empowermen

The Nigeria Solidarity Support Fund has launched the fifth edition of its national youth campaign, WeNaija 5.0, to promote sex education.

The two-month initiative, themed ‘Own Your Choice’, will run from September 8 through November 8, 2025. It seeks to address the dangers of incomplete or abstinence-only sex education while empowering young Nigerians with the knowledge to make informed decisions about their sexual and reproductive health.

Over the years, the WeNaija platform has mobilised thousands of youths to spotlight pressing health issues, including COVID-19, HPV vaccination, and drug abuse, through videos, spoken word, and visual storytelling. This year’s edition reframes SRH not only as a health concern but also as a youth empowerment priority.

Speaking at the launch recently in Lagos, Managing Director of the Nigeria Solidarity Support Fund, Dr. Fejiro Chinye-Nwoko, emphasised the importance of providing young people with accurate and judgement-free information.

“WeNaija 5.0 is about moving beyond silence and stigma to evidence, empathy, and empowerment, so that the next generation can truly own their choices and their futures,” she said.

The campaign comes amid evidence that limited sex education contributes to high rates of teenage pregnancy, unsafe abortions, and vulnerability to HIV and other sexually transmitted infections.

Experts note that stigma, misinformation, and gaps in school curricula have worsened the situation, while access to youth-friendly services remains limited.

Through WeNaija 5.0, Nigerians aged 18 to 35 are invited to create short videos (2–3 minutes) highlighting what comprehensive sex education means, the dangers of incomplete education, and innovative youth-led solutions for delivering SRH knowledge.

Entries will be shared on social media using the hashtag #OwnYourChoice.

The campaign will culminate in the WeNaija YouthFest & Winners’ Showcase on December 6, 2025, where finalists will be recognised and policy dialogues, expert panels, and creative showcases will be held to advance youth-friendly SRH advocacy.

“Our goal is simple: bring clarity where there’s confusion, bring care where there’s judgement, and bring youth to the table where decisions about their health are made,” Dr. Chinye-Nwoko added.

Founded to tackle urgent health issues through youth advocacy and policy development, NSSF says WeNaija remains its flagship youth engagement platform, now in its fifth year.
