The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission met with state regulators, power distributors, and other stakeholders on Monday to address transition challenges in the sector, following concerns around the tariffs payable by consumers.
The two-day meeting ongoing in Lagos is the commission’s quarterly meeting for the power sector, and it is the third for the year. The PUNCH had earlier reported that, as the crisis between states and electricity distribution companies continues to degenerate over who has the power to fix electricity tariffs, NERC had to summon all the stakeholders to a meeting.
In different posts on its social media handles on Monday, the commission confirmed that state electricity regulatory commissions or bureaus were at the meeting alongside other stakeholders. The meeting also discussed the call for the establishment of a Forum of Regulators to drive collaboration and strengthen state electricity regulation.
“At a roundtable with SERCs/SERBs, discussions focused on challenges in metering, account setup, and SubCo governance structures, alongside calls for a Forum of Regulators to drive ongoing collaboration and strengthen state electricity regulation,” the commission said.
In pictures shared online, the regulator said, “A roundtable between NERC and SERCs/SERBs focused on driving the Nigerian electricity market forward and addressing ongoing transition challenges.”
NERC disclosed that its third NESI Stakeholders Meeting of 2025 brought together State Electricity Regulatory Commissions/Bureaus and key industry players to deliberate on critical sector reforms, including asset & liabilities delineation, capping handover to state regulators, and customer band migration.
“This quarterly meeting continues to serve as a vital platform for collaboration, alignment, and progress in shaping the future of Nigeria’s electricity supply industry,” it added. The commission has yet to disclose the details of the meeting, which continues on Tuesday.
Efforts to reach the General Manager of Public Affairs at NERC, Dr Usman Abba-Arabi, did not succeed as of the time of filing this report. Abba-Arabi had told our correspondent last week that invitations were sent to the state regulatory commissions, the distribution companies, and other stakeholders in the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry.
“State Regulatory Commissions have been invited to attend the meeting. The Discos and other industry players will all be in attendance. It’s a forum where industry issues will be discussed and solutions proffered,” he stated last Thursday.
