The Enugu State Electricity Regulatory Commission has accused Mainpower Electricity Distribution Company Limited of violating its tariff order. In a public notice, the commission stated that it has come to its attention that Mainpower Electricity Distribution Company Limited has reverted to charging its Band A customers N209.50/kWh as against the commission’s order of 160.40/kWh.

The commission expressed displeasure that “this violation” persists despite prior directives from the commission mandating strict compliance with the tariff order. “Such actions constitute a breach of the Tariff Order by Mainpower Electricity Distribution Limited,” the commission said.

It urged Band A customers in Enugu State to report overbilling.

“Band A customers who have been billed above the approved rate are urged to report the discrepancy to the commission with evidence of the breach for necessary regulatory action, which may involve imposing appropriate sanctions on MainPower,” the EERC warned.

The commission also condemned the earlier power cut to Bands B, C, D, and E customers, which affected about 50 per cent of electricity customers in Enugu State. Recall that MainPower has written a petition to the EERC, calling for the suspension of the Band A tariff cut.

However, the commission noted that MainPower could only contest the directive after compliance. “MainPower retains the right to challenge the Tariff Order consistent with the processes as prescribed in the commission’s Business Rules, but such petitions will only be considered after full implementation of the current directive in line with Section 20 (7) of the Commission’s Business Rules,” it stated.

The commission reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing its regulatory authority as outlined in the Enugu State Electricity Law (2023).”

MainPower Electricity Distribution Company has filed a formal petition before the Enugu Electricity Regulatory Commission, rejecting the tariff order slashing Band A tariff from N209 per kilowatt-hour to N160/kWh. The petition, dated August 14, was a fallout of the tariff reduction order by the EERC, which took effect from August 1, 2025.

However, while the petition has yet to be heard, Enugu restored power and reportedly reverted to the old tariff. Customers said they now pay N209/kWh.
