Enugu Signs Loan Deal for Women’s Empowerment Program


The Enugu State Government has cemented its commitment to advancing women’s empowerment by signing a Subsidiary Loan Agreement for the Nigeria for Women Project, implemented through the Ministry of Children, Gender Affairs, and Social Development.

In a statement, it was noted that in a significant stride towards fostering economic empowerment and enhancing the livelihoods of women across Enugu State, under the administration of the Executive Governor of Enugu State, Dr Peter Mbah, has formally signed the Subsidiary Loan Agreement for the Nigeria for Women Project.

It stated, “This pivotal signing emphasises the state government’s unwavering dedication to the successful implementation of this vital initiative.

“The Nigeria for Women Project, supported by the World Bank, is designed to improve the livelihoods of women in participating states through enhanced access to livelihood support, financial services, and capacity building.

“For Enugu State, this project is poised to unlock immense opportunities for women-led businesses, industrialisation, export, food security, and promises to enhance financial inclusion and build resilience among vulnerable households.”

Speaking after the 2025 mission of the Nigeria for Women Project, the Commissioner for Children, Gender Affairs and Social Development, Ngozi Enih, reiterated that the administration is committed to gender equality and inclusive development.

She said, “Our women are the bedrock of our society and economy. By signing this Subsidiary Loan Agreement and promptly remitting the Counterpart Fund, we are not just fulfilling a requirement; we are demonstrating our profound belief in the potential of Enugu women and our resolve to provide them with the necessary tools and support to thrive,”

“The successful execution of the Subsidiary Loan Agreement and the timely payment of the Counterpart Fund will enable the project to kick off full-scale activities in Enugu State, including the establishment of Women Affinity Groups, provision of grants, training on financial literacy, and entrepreneurship skills development.”

The State Project Coordinator for the Nigeria for Women Project, Blessing Ogbonna, expressed gratitude to His Excellency for his visionary leadership and emphasis on women’s empowerment.

“We are immensely grateful to His Excellency for this timely intervention and unwavering support. This marks a new era of empowerment for Enugu women, and we are committed to ensuring the project’s success in transforming lives.

“This milestone marks a new dawn for women in Enugu State, promising a future of greater economic independence and prosperity. The Enugu State Government urges all stakeholders and beneficiaries to leverage this opportunity for collective growth and sustainable development,” Ogbonna added.
